Second digital TV licence awarded in Cyprus

The second licence for the operation of the digital television platform in Cyprus was earlier today awarded to Velister Ltd, a joint venture company formed by the private broadcasters of Cyprus.

It took 16 rounds for the second licence to be eventually awarded to Velister. Runner up LRG withthdrew its interest at 9 million euro, while cyta had left the race during the 7th round while the bidding amount was at 4.1 million euro.

Objections that were eventually rejected by the regulating authority concerned the terms of the tender. A complaint by LRG to the European Commission was the basis for the same company’s latest objection seeking to suspend the tender process, an evolvement refused by the regulating authority, namely the Office of the Commissioner for Electronic Communications and Postal Services.
