Cyprus 11/07 blast: Cyprus Attorney General called upon to resign by relatives of navy chief Andreas Ioannides

The family of Andreas Ioannides, the navy chief of Cyprus that lost his life in the explosion of 11/07/11 at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Cyprus along with 12 other people, have called upon the Attorney General of Cyprus to resign over omissions and delays in the criminal investigation of the case.

The Ioannides family, through their lawyers, state that a month after the devastation at the naval base, which was caused by the explosion of containers containing explosives, including gun powder and nitrogen, relating to Syria and Iran and originally confiscated by the Cypriot authorities while on board a Cyprus-flagged vessel, there are still no arrests whatsoever. Officials that are involved in the two years handling of the containers prior to the blast largely remained in their positions despite the blast and the ongoing police investigation, while forgery of official documents has been confessed as taking place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by a ministry employee.
